Retro Mamma is a unique local business based in String Bean Alley at Melbourne’s iconic Queen Victoria Market. We specialise in two very distinct areas.
Our vintage displays are full of 19th and early 20th century photographs - thousands of cabinet cards and carte de visit (cdv’s) from Melbourne and further afield.
The small portraits on metal are mainly ferrotypes, commonly called tin-types, which are on sheet iron. These images, produced largely by travelling photographers, represented the first opportunity for the working-class families to have their photograph taken.
Images on glass slides range from nursery stories produced in Germany in the late 1800’s to romantic Victorian scenes and 1920’s cinema advertising.
